Saugerties may have trouble maintaining a self-sustaining gallery scene, but it has long been fertile ground as a working home for artists of all stripes and media. According to many who live or keep studios there, the town's history of blue-collar workmanship and solid community values has amplified its role as a source and haven for creativity over recent years.
This weekend, August 8 and 9, all of us in the Hudson Valley can once again celebrate this quiet fact and get a gander at a great deal of fine art when the annual Saugerties Artists' Studio Tour - one of the region's best - runs daily on Saturday and Sunday. More than 30 professional artists will open their studios from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. over the weekend, as the seventh annual Tour features work and demonstrations by painters, printmakers, collagists, photographers, ceramists, sculptors and makers of fine furniture throughout the village and town.
The artists on this year's tour will include Beth Alden, Anita Barbour, Barbara Bravo, Allen Bryan, Diana Bryan, Michael Ciccone, Cynthia Dill, Ruth Edwy, Judith Frey, Angela Gaffney-Smith, Frances Gunderud, Mikhail Horowitz, Jemerick Art Pottery, Marsha Kaufman-Rubinstein, Alex Kveton, Hugh Morris, Debra Lavaggi, Polly M. Law, Ulf Loven, Annick Magac, Elin Menzies, Ze'ev Willy Neumann, Gus Pedersen, Ellen Perantoni, Tad Richards, Jacquie Roland, Jeff Schiller, Istar Schwager, Viorica Stan, Wardell Pottery & Metalwork and Carol Zaloom. Studio sites start along Routes 212 and off 9W heading towards the town from the south and west, and extend to borders with Catskill and Hunter, where a quick stop by the current Palenville Outdoor Sculpture show, a fabulously eclectic mix of works overlooking a rushing creek, is warranted.
A free opening reception for the weekend event will again take place at the always-inspirational Opus 40, off 212 to the west of town, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, August 7, with all the participating artists in attendance.
Maps for this free self-guided tour are available at the Saugerties Tourist Information Booth on Route 212 (across from the northbound Thruway entrance); at Smith Hardware at 227 Main Street in Saugerties; and at many other area business locations. Signs will be outside all locations, for easy identification. Preview the artists and their work by visiting www.saugertiesarttour.com.
