Rock the resort
Hip-hop masters meet jam-band mixers at Hudson Valley Resort in Kerhonkson next weekend

Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone - or KRS-One, as his close personal friends know him - is a towering and seminal figure in hip-hop. He's often praised for spawning the concept of the Lyrically Judged Emcee Battle (see: the destruction of MC Shan), laying the foundation for the hardcore ideology of gangsta rap (see: Criminal Minded) and, ironically, his charitable work within the Stop the Violence Movement, which he founded 20 years ago. The Jamaican-American continues his quest to decriminalize hip-hop, speaking out to record label heads and the FCC when he is among the headliners at the creatively booked Rock the Resort, a three-day bash out at Hudson Valley Resort and Spa in Kerhonkson, just 20 minutes from New Paltz, next weekend, December 4-6.

The trek is timed to his new album with Buckshot, Survival Skills, which includes Atmosphere's Slug on the track "We Made It." The "Teacha" will kick off the late-night music on Saturday, December 5 at midnight on the Main Stage with a 90-minute set. He will also present a lecture and sign copies of his new book, The Gospel of Hip-Hop: First Instrument.

Can a jam-band ethos vibe with a turned-on slice of the hip-hop orbit? Let's hope so. Add the bridge that links them, the deep funk and the ingredients of a classic 72-hour (literally, since each night goes until sunrise) throw-down. Eric Krasno - he of Soulive and Chapter 2 fame - is on the scene, as is Dumpstaphunk. The rage of New York City, Adam Deitch, will also be a deejay, helping out on the late-night Saturday jam along with DJ Logic, Krasno and others.

Melvin Seals from the later-era Garcia band is on the bill; and, speaking of the Grateful Dead, Radioactive - a wonderful speaker and turntable master - will put forth what he calls a Grateful Dead BeatBox Hour. This, my friends is the dark horse for festival Most Valuable Player. How about this idea: Go see Phish at the Garden Wednesday or Thursday, then head out to Kerhonkson?

Tickets for the festival are now on sale at www.paperchaserproductions.com/tickets.htm. Tickets can also be purchased in the Hudson Valley at Fuzion at 18 East Main Street in Middletown; Sierra Moon at 56 Main Street in New Paltz; and Postal Plus at 314 Route 94 South in Warwick. Please visit www.paperchaserproductions.com for more information.
