Christmas is coming to Gardiner on Friday, Dec. 4 as the town kicks off its annual tree-lighting ceremony. Carolers are invited to set up and start gathering in the Gardiner Gables just before 7 p.m. before their songful march through downtown. From there, the procession will head down Main Street until it reaches Town Hall for the lighting itself, said Jewel Turner, with the Gardiner Day Committee.
Turner added that revelers should be prepared to face the elements. "People should dress warm and remember to bring a flashlight," she said.
After the electricity starts flowing and that tree is glowing like Times Square, the crowds can warm themselves with food and refreshments at 2356 Route 44/55 in the caf←.
Lest one believe that Gardiner is a one-tree town, the Gardiner Association of Business is again putting on the "Trees of Giving" display -- only this time at Gardiner Library.
While the display officially opens on Saturday, Dec. 5, onlookers can get a Friday-night sneak preview of the trees from 5:30 p.m. until the caroling procession kicks off at 7 p.m. "Trees of Giving" are those made by local businesses to promote themselves -- for instance a winery might have a tree decorated with tinsel, corks, wine glasses and grapes.
Members of the public then vote for the tree they like the best by placing new or nearly new children's books, art supplies or school supplies under that winning evergreen.
"Trees of Giving" starts on Dec. 5 but will continue until Friday, Dec. 11, and the display is open for viewing during normal library hours at 133 Farmer's Turnpike.
That Saturday will feature a wreath and poinsettia sale at the Gardiner Fire House. All those decorations are being sold by the Friends of the Gardiner Library to help benefit the library itself. That sale runs from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at 100 Main St. in Gardiner.
