When the artists’ collective now known as Longreach Arts – which finishes up a monthlong exhibition at Highland’s Pritzker Gallery this coming weekend – first came together in Poughkeepsie in 1982, it did so with a simple mission. The local gallery scene hadn’t quite gelled at that point beyond a few choice sites in Woodstock (given to that community’s own artists), and the professional visual artists who formed what was then known as Summergroup did so to set up a cooperative gallery. This space ran in the Dutchess County seat’s old City Hall for nine years before moving to other spaces, eventually landing in various locations each year, after changing its name to reflect the shifts in its members’ lives (and painting patterns) over time.

The group represented in the appropriately named (and exuberantly curated and hung) “Summer Break” – currently including Mildred Cohen, Staats Fasoldt, Stacie Flint, Susan Fowler-Gallagher, José Gomez, Claudia Gorman, Trina Greene, Robert Hastings, Carol Loizides, Sherrill Meyers-Nilson, Ellen Metzger O’Shea, Carol Pepper-Cooper, Nancy Scott, Elayne Seaman, Michelle Squires and Marlene Wiedenbaum – ended up at Pritzker’s own remarkably located gallery in her Casa del Arte home and workspace. This bauble of an architectural wonder is located at 257 South Riverside Road in the Town of Lloyd, just off Route 299 between Highland and New Paltz.
