The newly renovated Studley Theatre on the SUNY-New Paltz campus will be occupied by students practicing the art of enchantment, when the Miami Theatre Players perform the musical Into the Woods next week. The Tony Award-winning play, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, debuted in 1986 and has been produced on countless stages worldwide. Interweaving the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales, this version of the play is based in Bruno Bettelheim’s analysis of traditional fairy tales in Freudian terms. Certainly, the preponderance of abandonment, death, witches and general hardship in the stories Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Cinderella were not meant for mere entertainment when they were originally written. Children were perhaps expected to interpret them in what Bettelheim called symbolic terms.
