Steve McQueen, Paul Newman and Lee Marvin may have raced some mighty fine wheels in their day, but none could match the class of 007’s classic DB5: silver and sleek with a list of accoutrements. The DB5 defined the sophisticated man’s (and woman’s) inner driving demon for a full generation. Accrding to one unknown wise person, “The American dream is owning a British sports car, smoking a Havana cigar and drinking Russian vodka on the French Riviera.”
On Sunday, October 9, the scenic lawns in front of the Woodstock Playhouse will be given over to the community’s third annual Woodstock British Car Show. More than 100 classic British cars will be on view, augmented by classic motorcycles and other European models (pre-1980), along with food, raffles and – this being Woodstock – music. Hopefully, this being all about classic MGs, Spitfires, and as the event’s motto runs, “Peace, Love & Lucas,” there’ll be plenty of fine Mod tunes to keep everyone in the right moods.
Lucas, you ask? Ahhh…a reference to the Scions of Lucas, the informal group by which serious collectors of Brit cars assemble, itself being a further reference to a noted English parts manufacturer, based in Birmingham since the mid-19th century.
There will be free spectator parking and admission during this event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (please take out this other raindate reference in original) All proceeds go to benefit the newly revived Playhouse, which finished its first season of ecstatically received repertory summer stock theater last month.
