The team’s owner was a sweet man named Jay Polan, who owned and operated a bus company in nearby Chicago. Too bad JP was in jail for trying to obtain a max contract for a prime school bus route by bribing a local alderman. It was business as usual in Chi-town, but Jay had the misfortune of approaching that rarest of Chicago politicians — an honest one — and wound up being awarded a three-year scholarship to a minimum-security joint somewhere in Northern California. It was Christmas 1989, I was coaching the Rockford Lightning of the Continental Basketball Association, the CBA, pro basketball’s top and tawdry minor league, and Santa Claus had forgotten to stuff my stocking with wins. But agonizing through a losing season turned out to be the least of my problems.
