Can’t make it to the Manhattan production of The Nutcracker this weekend? Never mind; the venerable Catskill Ballet Theater’s annual production of the holiday classic, running over a quarter-century now, will be hitting the stage at the region’s largest venue, the Ulster Performing Arts Center (UPAC), this coming Friday through Sunday, fresh on the heels of UPAC’s annual production of A Christmas Carol. Following a Thursday-morning performance just for local schools, things kick off with an 8 p.m. performance on Friday, December 10, another at the same time on Saturday, December 11 and then a final matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, December 12.

Spirited and beautifully staged, this annual treasure has a homey warmth that demonstrates the staying power of this regional stalwart of a company, founded in 1981. Best of all, the production works with local teachers, sending weblinks and other educational materials in the weeks before their dancers hit the boards to ensure that their young audiences know just what they’re seeing, as well as its heritage and placement in the continuum of our artistic legacies.Tickets go fast, so don’t let yourselves miss a Nutcracker this season.
