Rickie Lee Jones is the rarest of artists in the pop music field: someone who's committed to creativity and taking artistic chances - a cliché usually, but something that Jones can back up with 30 years of recordings that have crossed many stylistic boundaries without ever fully landing inside one. Although she never repeated the success of what turned out to be, in retrospect, something of a fluke hit, the irresistible "Chuck E.'s in Love" from her 1979 debut, she has made consistently challenging music with complete disregard for anyone's conventions but her own. She brings her band into the Bardavon this Saturday, October 24 at 8 p.m.

Jones balances taking chances on stage with the reality that her back catalogue is a stunning body of work, and thus does not shy away from playing those songs. But expect a healthy dose of songs from her soon-to-be-released Balm in Gilead.

No matter what she plays, the woman just has that unidentifiable stage presence - which, considering her background, makes sense. Her dad was the songwriter; her Aunt Bea, the singer; her grandfather, a one-legged vaudeville dancer named Peg Leg Jones. Who knew?
