Sydney Cash’s light sculptures are a medium unto themselves. In those galleries that have shown them, they tend to stand out as an anachronism – something slightly apart from both the more legacy-bound or contemporarily edgy works that we grow used to up here. One aspect of them feels Modernist, while other elements reach beyond materials into something truly ephemeral.

From what I can tell, Cash’s new “light sculpture” stage backdrop for the Thursday, Friday and Saturday night performances at the Falcon in Marlboro – the region’s world-class jazz venue – are spot-on the best demonstration of this artist’s strengths that we’ve seen to date. Cash is using the Falcon as his “experimental studio” for this work-in-progress installation, and has been creating ways for the light patternings that he has designed to respond to the emotion of the music being played.

The Falcon is located at 1348 Route 9W in Marlboro; park in back. Call (845) 236-7970 or visit www.liveatthefalcon.com for further information. For more on Cash’s light sculptures, visit http://cargocollective.com/sydneycash.
