Oo Gallery, located in Uptown Kingston at 324 Wall Street, is about to become the gallery du jour for the region this weekend when it opens its second group exhibition, “Foot,” on Friday evening, April 22. “The exhibition will display works on paper by artists, playing an open-ended visual game based on their individual responses to the word ‘foot,’” is all we get from the new gallery born of last year’s O festival, which opened this past winter with “Soot.”

“What of Foot? It’s at the bottom, and yet it propels us forward. Hanging will be works examining any foot-related theme, possibly including but not limited to: the appendage attached to one’s ankles/one’s legs; the foot of a mountain; the foot of a page; botanical, nautical, textual, sediment; walkabouts, wandering, Freud, fetish, measurement; syllabic poetic (iamb, dactyl, dispondee…); mythical heroes’ foot vulnerability; shoes, heels, toes; bare, cloven, filthy or sore; ‘one foot in the grave’; ‘one foot out the door.’”

Initiated on the site of the former Surprenant Gallery by Kevin Paulsen, a former antiques dealer and artist, the gallery has drawn a growing coterie of serious-minded local artists with an eye for witty work that’s simultaneously process-oriented – as well as some serious collectors starting to recognize the numbers of emerging artists coming to the fore in the Hudson Valley just now. In addition to Oo’s works on papers, which were being assembled for the “Foot” exhibition as this publication was going to print, Paulsen’s operation also includes skin art by his son Geddes.
