As I walked through the dog pen back to the house this morning, a big black-and-white insect flew up and banged against the back wall of the house, fell to the stone walk and flew up again, repeating its routine. On its third try it bounced off the wall and up into a loose strand of an old spider web where it became momentarily entangled. I grabbed for it. I was astonished to feel it in my hand struggling. It brought back old memories.
