The spot on the hill where the monks at Holy Ascension Monastery out on Cold Brook Road plan to build their mini cathedral, a 1/5th scale replica of the legendary Hagia Sophia in Constantinople built by Justinian the Great, has a serenity that belies the piles of bricks, cement blocks, and other construction materials piled there. The Catskills ring the view; all one hears is birdsong, the rustle of wind over the trees; the scene of chickens scurrying as black-robed monks feed them by the converted boarding house and farm outbuildings of the monastery down the field.
