Isabella V. Torelli, age 86, of Walden, died on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010 at Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in Newburgh surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Torelli was born on Sept. 17, 1923 in the Bronx. She was the daughter of Matthias and Catherine Mullin Barringer. She married Joseph Torelli.
She was retired from the New York City School System.
She is survived by one son and daughter in law, Ralph and wife Barbara Torelli Sr. of Walden; one sister, Anna Grassie of Middletown; grandsons, Joseph Torelli of Wallkill, Ralph Torelli Jr. of Wallkill, Anthony Torelli of Clintondale, Stephen Martin of Modena; granddaughters, Crystal Young of Plattekill, Ashley Martin of Wallkill; great grandchildren, Sarah, Collin, Craig Young of Plattekill; great grandson, Andrew Martin of Modena; great granddaughters, Autumn, Lillian, Olivia Martin of Wallkill; great grandson, Franklin Furgueson of Plattekill.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Torelli and two sons, Vincent and Joseph Torelli.

John Martin Howe Jr
John Martin Howe Jr, of Modena, died suddenly at his home on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010, with health complications. Born Jan. 12, 1979, John was 31 years old. He was a student at Highland schools and a lifelong resident of Ulster County.
John was employed by Vassar College as a maintenance engineer since 2004. He enjoyed music, games, fishing, pets, friends and family. He was a self-taught musician. He taught himself to play the guitar and drums as a young teenager. Always the loving child, adolescent and young man, John wore a ready smile on his face and a big heart on his sleeve. He was uncommonly sensitive and bright, and walked in a world that was sometimes a difficult challenge for him. John will be deeply missed by his loved ones who will remember him for his wit, his affection and the legacy of his life.
Surviving John is his best friend and father, John Martin Howe Sr, of New Paltz. He was predeceased by his mother, Elaine Franklin on June 10, 2006; maternal grandparents Al and Mary Franklin; and paternal grandfather Austin G. Howe Jr.
Also surviving are his paternal grandmother, Leonora Costantino Howe Doyle and her husband William; paternal step-grandmother, Joan Howe of Fort Pierce, FL; John’s brother and his wife, Adam and Laurie Litman; and nephew and niece, Jade and Stephanie of Highland; his maternal aunts and uncles, Jim and Mary Ellen Dagata of Highland, and Joe and Barbara Smith of Massachusetts and their two sons, Justice and Lucas; paternal aunts and uncles, Robert and Lynn Howe of Erial, NJ, Rick and Barbara Howe Amendola of Mill Spring, NC, and Michael and Cindy Howe of Kalispell, Montana; and many cousins; great uncle and aunt, Hasner and Betty Howe, Hilton, NY.

Alfred C. Johnstone
Alfred C. Johnstone, age 65, of New Paltz, passed away after a valiant battle with COPD and heart disease on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie.
Mr. Johnstone was born on July 16, 1945 in New York, NY. He was the son of Alfred W. and Madeline (Balder) Johnstone.
He graduated from Mercy College with a BS in Behavioral Service. He worked as a retail store manager and trainer for Stewart’s and Cumberland Farms in the Capital District area.
He served with the 1st Cavalry in Vietnam from March 1966 to March 1967, before being honorably discharged in June 1967. He was awarded the Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster while serving in Vietnam. On Nov. 1, 1966, he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with a V Devico during a battle in Vietnam.
Mr. Johnstone is survived by a brother, three daughters, of whom he was proud of their accomplishments, a grandson and two granddaughters; he adored from afar. A master of origami and a wizard of cards, he lived his life to the fullest. Al touched many lives and will be fondly remembered by his large family of friends in New Paltz, Starbucks and beyond.

Richard A.V. King
Richard A.V. King of Highland died peacefully at home a week after celebrating his 80th birthday with family and friends. Dick was born on August 1, 1930 in Boston, MA. He and his three brothers spent their childhood in foster care. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950, two days before the outbreak of the Korean War. He served two years in combat in Korea and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Even though he never attended high school, Dick enrolled in the New Paltz Teachers’ College (now SUNY) where, with the mentoring of several outstanding professors, he found he had a talent for science. After receiving his degree, he began teaching physics and chemistry in the Spackenkill Middle School. Twenty-nine years of students fondly remember Mr. King’s science classes. Dick was an inventor and a seeker. He particularly enjoyed exploring the fields of neurobiofeedback, astronomy, and philosophy. He loved building things and could figure out how to fix most anything. He was kind and caring and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Stephanie, whom he married in 1982; his son Richard A.V. King II, daughter-in-law, Marie, and three wonderful granddaughters, Alexandra, Ashley and Cassidy of Yorktown Heights and stepdaughter, Claudia Breed Rose of Euclid, OH. He was predeceased by his three brothers Gilbert, Benjamin and Phillips King and beloved son Eric King.
Calling hours will be at the Sutton Funeral Home, One Woodside Place, Highland, on Wednesday, August 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial with military honors will be private at the Lloyd Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 12. A gathering to celebrate Dick’s life will be held at the Highland Landing Park on the Hudson River at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 12.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Highland Landing Park Association (P.O. Box 329, Highland, NY 12528) a place Dick greatly enjoyed.
